VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTION
MENTOR ROLE:
To serve as an adult role model to a youth between
the ages of 6-17 referred to Durham Companions for a period
of one year.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participate in an initial match meeting with your mentee and family;
- Maintain regular contact with your mentee on a weekly basis (two
hours minimum);
- Attend all mandatory mentor meetings;
- Assist in recruiting other adults to serve as mentors;
- Create a schedule with a variety of fun,
educational, and positive activities, including youth’s interests;
- Provide program coordinator monthly reports on-time for state reporting
purposes regarding your contact hours and face-to-face time with your
match;
- Contact program coordinator and/or executive director when problems
arise with your youth;
- Serve as an ambassador for Durham Companions in the community;
- Participate in fundraising efforts which provides funding for group
activities through Durham Companions;
- Attend in-service training sessions to increase your awareness of
issues affecting our youth and teach you how to handle the situation(s)
when they arise;
- Maintain safety standards in all your activities with your youth.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Complete Volunteer Application Process including criminal background
screening;
- Interview with program coordinator (approximate time frame of interview
is one hour);
- Participate in volunteer training;
- Demonstrate planning, organizational, and problem-solving abilities;
- Show a genuine concern for youth regardless of their individual
circumstances;
- Accept and adhere to the mission of Durham Companions.
METHOD OF SELECTION:
Selected by the program coordinator and/or executive
director.
In some instances, board approval may be needed.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
Accountability is to the program coordinator, the executive
director and the board of directors.
TERM OF POSITION:
An adult volunteer can serve as a mentor for a period
of one-year
in the Governor’s One-on-One Program. An adult can be rematched for one additional year, upon approval
by the board of directors.
